DEFINITION
The Community Service Officer (CSO’s) position is responsible for providing exemplary community focused services. A Community Service Officer will gain comprehensive knowledge of crime prevention, community events, traffic control, department procedures the role and responsibilities of a police department to their community. This position will provide an opportunity to establish a CTE pathway for young adults to pursue a law enforcement or police dispatch career.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the SUSD Lieutenant and Sergeant. Exercises no supervision.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Answer emergency telephone requests for police, fire and medical emergencies; determine the seriousness of the situation and coordinates appropriate assistance with dispatch in accordance with predetermined plans or as directed.
- Screens each request for assistance to determine if the District Police can best handle it or refers the caller to other District or Public Agencies.
- Maintain various departmental files including criminal records and confidential files.
- Prepare files, checks routes and files reports, department documents and records, prepares, and maintains periodical operational reports and records including statistical data.
- Fingerprinting duties as assigned
- Provides clerical support as necessary (E).
- Put up Radar & Traffic sign equipment at various schools sites throughout the district.
- Participates in community outreach events and projects, and special Police Department functions and presentations for crime prevention (E).
- Provides traffic, parking and crowd control during special functions.
- Constant contact with community members, SUSD staff, students and parents to provide information and referrals in non-hazardous situations (E).
- Prepares, edits and distributes newsletters, pamphlets and other informational materials (E).
- Works with Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) school sites, the SUSD Police Department, the community, and other local/relevant departments citywide to coordinate and participate in special events (E).
- Delivers Emergency and Non-Emergency messages
- Maintains log of activities of each officer including time, location, and nature of an incident reported.
- Perform special projects and prepare various forms and reports on behalf of the Police Department; attend to administrative details on special matters as assigned; perform varied duties related to the Police Departments area of responsibility and assigned programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Physical Demands:
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer terminal/typewriter and operate standard police office equipment
- Sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time
- See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids
- Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone, with or without hearing aids
- Lift and/or carry, push or pull up to 25 lbs. at the waist height for short distances
- Bend at the waist, kneeling or crouching
- Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, grasp, push/pull
- Physical Agility & Stamina
Ability to:
- Function without close supervision
- Read and use maps.
- Follow oral and written procedures and directions.
- Ability to learn, memorize, and understand radio and statue codes.
- Maintain courteous and cooperative behavior in adverse situations.
- Learn to safely operate and maintain equipment used in the performance ofduties.
- Deal effectively with the public, learn customer service techniques for interacting with others which may include in difficult or confrontational situations.
- Work irregular hours, variable locations, and week days.
- Work in extreme weather conditions for extended periods.
Knowledge of:
- English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
- Telephone, terminal, teletype and radio operating requirements and techniques
MIN. QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to: Graduation from the twelfth grade and one (1) of experiences with a law enforcement agency as a Explorer or Student Service Officer, or course in Criminal Justice work preferred.
- 18 years old
- No Felony convictions
- Valid California Driver License
Criminal History and Background Check:
The District will conduct an extensive background check and access statewide and federal criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment. The background check will verify personal and professional reference checks, credit and driving history. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection process. The District shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate’s ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information, the candidate will be fingerprinted. Any subsequent arrest notifications and dispositions may be obtained and considered for continued employment.
